Labor Day weekend arrives at the tail end of the busy summer stretch on the outer Cape, with plentiful sunshine and beaches still beckoning, art gallery strolls and live concerts on the calendar, and special events like a themed party for charity and festivities at a nearby winery. It’s all easily accessible from our Provincetown bed and breakfast, so escape over Labor Day and celebrate summer’s farewell with a memorable few days on Cape Cod.
Classic Beach Days – Swimming, Lighthouses, Live Music, Nature, and Stunning Sunsets
As the unofficial last hoorah of summer, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to take advantage of the miles of beaches just outside Provincetown, as ocean temperatures remain in the high 60s through late August and early September. Grab your beach towel, hop on a rented bike from P-town Bikes, and cruise out for an afternoon of relaxation on the picturesque dunes at Race Point Beach – regularly voted one of the best beaches on the East Coast.
In addition to seals charmingly playing in the waves, you’ll also see plenty of sea birds still on the Cape and yet to make their fall migration south. You may catch sight of piping plovers nesting nearby, once endangered but thriving after decades of conservation, with their distinctive white plumage and tiny orange legs. Between dips in the ocean, stroll west down the dunes to Race Point Light, one of several iconic Cape Cod lighthouses surrounding Provincetown, a lovely place to snap some end-of-summer pics at the very tip of the Cape peninsula. On the way to/from Race Point Beach, plan a short stop off Race Point Rd at Beech Forest for a leisurely hike on the 1-mile loop, which circles two scenic ponds and dense stands of old-growth trees, excellent for bird-watching and exploring more of the untouched nature within the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Plan to check out the Sunset Music Series at Race Point on Wed, 8/26, the last 2024 edition of the annual summertime music tradition, which runs from mid-June through Labor Day week. The local Cape Cod band, the Rip It Ups, will take the stage at 6 pm at Far Land Provisions, located on the sand – get lobster rolls, eggplant fries, and cold beers from their cash-only restaurant and bar. Although neighboring Herring Cove is more known for sunset-watching, the sunsets at Race Point are equally spectacular, showing off the Cape’s breathtaking beauty.
Nights on the Town – Art Gallery Strolls, Dinner Overlooking the Water, and Music Legends on Stage
Our local arts and culture scene is always bustling, and Labor Day weekend is no exception, with many opportunities to browse nearby Provincetown art galleries and catch a concert. On the Friday leading into the holiday weekend, join the downtown action from 6-9 pm during the Art Stroll hosted by the Provincetown Art Gallery Association, when over a dozen art galleries open their doors and stay open late every Friday from May through October. Start on the west end at Gary Marotta Gallery, which shows the photography of Arthur Nichols through the end of August. As you approach the marina, stop at Silver Glass to marvel at exquisite stained glass pieces alongside watercolors. Continue down Commercial St into the East End, where you’ll find contemporary sculptures and oil/acrylic works at Bowersock Gallery, colorful Cuban modernist paintings at Galeria Cubana, and a massive selection of renowned artists at Four Eleven Gallery.
Finish your art walk at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, free of admission on Fridays until 8 pm, where you’ll find exhibits like Bounties of the Sea featuring art inspired by the Cape’s rich fishing, boating, and maritime history. Wind down the evening with delicious dinner and cocktails overlooking the bay at Fanizzi’s, one of several longstanding Provincetown restaurants, and worthy of treating yourself during your weekend getaway – the dining room views are just as exquisite as the dishes from their award-winning kitchen. Alternatively, grab a quick bite to eat at Lobster Pot, the birthplace of Anthony Bourdain’s cooking career, and enjoy the stunning views of the harbor on the back patio.
On the Thursday (8/29) leading into Labor Day weekend, seize the unique chance to see legendary soul singer Mavis Staples at the Payomet Performing Arts Center. Located just 10 miles south of Provincetown in North Truro, Payomet’s 100-acre pastoral property and concert venue is within the Cape Cod National Seashore, one of the most scenic spots in the world to see a show. Having won three Grammys during her illustrious career and being a civil rights icon in addition to her musical pedigree, Staples’ performance will surely be memorable. A few days later, on Sun 9/1, Payomet brings the Indigo Girls to the Provincetown Hall stage across the street from our location. One of the best-known American folk rock acts and known for their LGBTQ+ and political activism, seeing the Indigo Girls in such an intimate space is a rare occurrence and one not to miss.
Special Events All Weekend – Farmers’ Market, Partying for a Cause, and Sunday Fun at a Vineyard
Fill in your Labor Day weekend with other fun outings, like the Saturday morning Provincetown Farmers’ Market, which draws bigger crowds around summer holidays like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Plenty of produce, like sweet corn, peppers, carrots, and fruits such as peaches and blackberries, are still in season, all harvested on local family farms. Sustainable Cape organizes several farmers’ markets on Cape Cod, so if you miss the Sat market in Provincetown, head down to the weekday market held every Wed just 15 miles south in Wellfleet
After the market, put on your finest summer white linens and join the 36th-annual Provincetown White Party on the far west end of Commercial St at Delft Haven. Held every Saturday of Labor Day weekend since the late 1980s, the all-day party celebrates the end of summer in style, akin to a glamorous scene from The Great Gatsby, with everyone dressed in elegant white while mingling and sipping drinks on the sand. All proceeds go to local non-profit Outer Cape Health Services, and the White Party promoters have raised over a half million dollars for charity over the decades, making it a party with a genuine cause.
On Sunday of Labor Day weekend, drive 10 minutes south of Provincetown to Truro Vineyards and South Hollow Spirits for their final “Sunday Funday” event of the year. From 5:30-7:30 pm, local food truck Crush Pad served up tasty dishes like lobster rolls and chimichurri tacos, perfectly complementing a summertime sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, or refreshing mixed drink made with their Dry Line Gin, uniquely distilled from grape skins. Enjoy live tunes from DJ Emerson and sip your glasses as the sun sets over the rows of grapes, a magical Cape Cod moment.
