Provincetown has long been a sanctuary for creators. Since the late 19th century, artists have flocked to the tip of the Cape, drawn by the ethereal “P-town light” and the rugged beauty of the dunes. Today, that legacy is alive and well, turning our town into a living studio where you don’t just look at art, you make it.
But you don’t have to be a professional to get your hands dirty here. Whether you’ve never held a paintbrush or you’re looking to push your work in a new direction, there are plenty of things to do in Cape Cod that will spark your imagination. Many are designed with visitors in mind, fitting neatly into a long weekend or a week’s stay at our Provincetown hotel. Here’s where to find them.
Provincetown Art Association and Museum
The Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) has been central to the town’s creative life since 1914. Their museum school offers year-round classes and workshops in painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, and sculpture. What makes PAAM particularly accessible for visitors is the variety of formats available.
Some workshops run just two or three days, perfect if you’re here for a week and want to dedicate a few mornings to learning something new. They also offer drop-in life drawing sessions if you want something less structured. Check their schedule before your trip to see what aligns with your stay. Subjects range from watercolor and oil painting to mapping and drawing fundamentals. They run programs for children too, through their Little Artists series, so if you’re traveling with younger family members who want to create, PAAM has options.

Fine Arts Work Center
Located just a short walk from our front door, the Fine Arts Work Center is world-renowned for its residency programs, but their summer workshop series is open to everyone and attracts serious students from across the country.
The visual arts offerings include block printing, sculpture, collage, photography, and natural paint making using botanical and earth-based pigments. Writers can choose from poetry, fiction, memoir, and playwriting workshops. Sessions run Monday through Friday, typically from 9am to noon, leaving your afternoons and weekends free for exploring the beach, wandering galleries, or simply letting what you learned sink in.
The Cape School of Art
For painters interested in the Impressionist tradition that made Provincetown famous, The Cape School of Art carries on the legacy of Charles Hawthorne and his student Henry Hensche. Their instructors teach techniques developed right here on this stretch of coast more than a century ago.
Most workshops run five days and focus on landscape painting, plein air work, and understanding color and light. You’ll find courses with names like “No Fear Plein Air Painting” and “Traditional Cape School Color” that give you a sense of what to expect: painting outdoors, studying how light changes throughout the day, and learning to see the way the masters who worked here taught their students to see.
The Cape School also offers shorter options, including two-day workshops on drawing for painters and weekend intensives.
Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill
About 15 minutes south of Provincetown in Truro, Castle Hill offers one of the most diverse workshop programs on the Cape. Their summer schedule reads like a creative bucket list: pottery and wheel throwing, glass art, wood carving, metalwork, basketry, encaustic painting, printmaking, papermaking, and much more.
You can find single-day workshops if you just want to try something new, two to five-day intensives for deeper learning, and longer summer programs for those who want to truly immerse themselves.
Writing workshops are part of the mix too, along with wellbeing-focused sessions like herbal self-care and bonsai. The campus itself, set within a historic barn setting with views across rolling terrain, is part of the draw. It feels like a true escape, which is exactly what a creative retreat should be.
Truro Clay Works
If you’ve always wanted to try throwing on a pottery wheel, Truro Clay Works makes it easy. They offer drop-in wheel throwing sessions on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5 to 8pm. With only four spots available, it’s an intimate experience with personal attention, not a tourist activity where you watch someone else work.
All levels are welcome, whether you’ve never touched clay or you’re a returning ceramicist looking for studio time. Book ahead because these sessions fill up quickly, especially in summer.
Painting on the Hill at Pilgrim Monument
Every other Tuesday morning from mid-June through August, local artist Tom Acone leads Painting on the Hill, a plein air painting experience on the grounds of the Pilgrim Monument. Registration includes all materials: easels, paints, brushes, and everything you need.
The setting is hard to beat. You’re painting with views of Cape Cod Bay, the harbor, and the Provincetown rooftops spread out below you. As a bonus, participants receive half-price admission to the museum and monument afterward. It’s a nice way to combine a creative morning with a bit of local history.
Classes Farther Down the Cape
If you’re staying longer or willing to drive a bit, the rest of Cape Cod has creative options too.
The Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis offers longer semester workshops as well as monthly paint nights and occasional one-night classes ranging from gardening to painting to art history. These work better if you’re here for an extended stay or if you’re a local looking for ongoing instruction.
The Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable runs workshops throughout the year in a variety of media.
For those who want to walk in and create without a reservation, Earth Glass and Fire Creative Arts Studio in Dennis offers open studio time alongside instructor-led project classes in fused glass and pottery. It’s a great option if you’re looking for things to do in Cape Cod for a fun date night, girls’ getaway, or if you just need flexibility on a rainy day.
