Celebrating the Season’s Special Events
Provincetown’s social calendar features festivals throughout the year, starting with Pride in early summer, Carnival and Women’s Week later in the summer and fall, and continuing into winter with Holly Folly and First Light.
Famously the oldest and largest LGBTQ+ holiday gathering in the US, Holly Folly ushers in winter during the first week of December with a jam-packed weekend of lively events. Start the weekend by joining the afternoon art gallery stroll on Friday, followed the next morning by running in or spectating at the Jingle Bell Run, when participants dash through downtown wearing Santa hats and festive costumes. After the 9 am fun run, a party brunch at Crown and Anchor features holiday-flavored Moscow mules and dancing. On Saturday evening, the Holly Folly Follies “holiday extravaganza” takes over the hallowed stage at Provincetown Hall (located directly across the street from us). The Holly Folly revelry wraps up on Sunday with the Snowball Bar Crawl, a full day of festive wining and dining at local hotspots like Harbor Lounge, Provincetown Brewing Company, and Fanizzi’s.
First Light ushers in the new year in Provincetown with a week of special events, all culminating with a spectacular fireworks display over MacMillan pier at dusk on New Year’s Eve. Join parties on the days leading up to New Year’s at local bars and eateries, and test your cold-water bravery while raising thousands of dollars for charity at the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day.
Exploring Boutiques, Art, and Provincetown’s Winter Charm
While summer on the Cape is known for its sun-splashed days, winter brings a more low-key atmosphere, and many locally-owned shops and galleries stay open through the colder months. Bundle up and stroll hand-in-hand down Commercial St while shopping in boutiques like Marine Specialties, selling quirky and one-of-a-kind treasures for over 60 years; candles, crafts, and pottery at Botanica; and decadent fudge treats made with the same family recipe for four decades, at Provincetown Fudge Factory.
Provincetown’s art galleries are a delight for art lovers. Many of them are open year-round, some every day and others on weekends, including the diverse collection (representing dozens of artists from different backgrounds and styles) at Cortile Gallery, voted “best gallery” by the experts at Cape Cod Life. A visit to the Frederick Studio is a rare chance to see James Frederick, a renowned local artist, in his workspace, creating impressionistic seascapes that make for an ideal artistic souvenir of your Cape Cod escape.
Check the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) for special events throughout the winter, including members’ juried exhibitions featuring work from PAAM’s extended network of artist members.
Romantic Adventures – Beaches, Bird-Watching, and Natural Beauty on the Seashore
The cooler months on Cape Cod offer opportunities for exploring the outdoors in solitude and the miles of nature preserved within the vast Cape Cod National Seashore – which, as a bonus, does not charge entry fees after mid-September. Start your mornings with a peaceful walk along Herring Cove Beach, famous for its gentle winter light, which you’ll see depicted in seascape paintings while browsing Provincetown’s galleries. For the most romantic experience, return to Herring Cove in the evening with a bottle of wine, picnic nibbles from Far Land Provisions, and share a toast while watching a spectacular sunset and the vibrant colors reflecting the still harbor waters.
In winter, the Province Lands Bike Trail is wide open without the summertime biking crowds, ideal for a laidback bike ride or hike alongside snow-dusted dunes and pristine pine forests. Although the Province Lands Visitor’s Center closes during the low season, you can still take in the panoramic views from its wrap-around deck – a picturesque spot to enjoy a quiet moment with your special someone, with the Atlantic Ocean as your beautiful backdrop.
If you’re into bird-watching, bundle up and spend an afternoon in nature with your binoculars handy at Beech Forest. Watch for black-capped chickadees, Canadian geese, and wood warblers – easily spotted with their bright yellow plumage and who use Beech Forest’s dense forest during their winter migration. On a different afternoon, take a long stroll down the sprawling dunes at Race Point Beach, where you’ll see shorebirds like loons and gulls, and Race Point Light awaits at the very tip of the Cape – a must-visit spot for photography enthusiasts and perfect for snapping some stunning couples’ photos.
Lively Entertainment and Nightlife
After catching the sunset at Herring Cove, regroup at your Gabriel’s room before heading out for a date night in downtown Provincetown. Enjoy dinner with majestic views at any number of eateries overlooking the harbor – Fanizzi’s, the Mews, and the Canteen are three of our favorite restaurants in Provincetown that stay open through winter – followed by live entertainment and craft cocktails at Tin Pan Alley. Request an intimate corner table as the live tunes set the ambiance for a romantic evening.
After dinner, stroll just a couple blocks down Commercial St to Waters Edge Cinema, a charming two-screen arthouse theater showing a mix of national releases, foreign films, and local productions. Waters Edge is also the home base for the annual Provincetown Film Festival, which hosts special screenings and filmmaker discussions throughout the year, as well as a weeklong film fest held every June.
For a more risque night out, the Crown & Anchor showcases live cabaret, musical performances, and DJs spinning records at their Wave Bar, where the dance floor comes alive after 9 pm every weekend throughout the winter. Or combine a delicious meal and classy cabaret at the Post Office Cafe, whose performers have been legendary for over five decades.
